Essential Job Duties:
The CALS Science Communications and Marketing Specialist serves as the lead communicator for the Research in the college. The candidate will be proactive in helping NCARS and CALS Communications develop and implement strategic communications and marketing initiatives that help: elevate the reputation of NC State's agricultural and life sciences research enterprise among peer institutions and scientific audiences; support and promote the NC Plant Sciences Initiative (NC PSI) internally and externally, establishing NC State as the global leader in interdisciplinary plant sciences research; promote a culture of communication among CALS researchers through consultation and services that more broadly connects their work to funders, partners, and lay audiences; advance funding opportunities; nurture and expand research and industry partnerships; help explain, illustrate, and demonstrate to state and federal leaders the impact of the college's research portfolio on the state of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.
As a member of the CALS Communications team, the candidate will work collaboratively with teams from NC State University Communications and Marketing, NC State University Office of Research and Commercialization, , NCARS and others to coordinate and produce effective communications and marketing products that include digital stories, social media strategy and content, email campaigns, print collateral, publications, videos, white papers, talking points, and other communications as needed. This position will work closely with NCARS administration, faculty, and staff to ensure communications accurately and precisely emphasize CALS research results and drive defined organizational priorities.
The successful candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to understand and translate the complexities of science into language that meets the needs of diverse audiences, including laypersons. The successful candidate will work well with a team and possess strong time management, problem-solving and project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and desired outcomes.
NCARS Research Communications
Establish and cultivate relationships with CALS researchers helping publicize their work among internal and external audiences through effective communications and marketing strategies and tactics, and using a consultative approach, enhance their comfort and skills in self-directed communications activities.
Lead communications discovery efforts for NCARS research programs, centers, stations, and initiatives, identifying grand challenges addressed through CALS research, key objectives, and milestones for projects, defining communications priorities, target audiences, appropriate content and platforms, and coordinate resources and timelines to support communication activities.
Lead development and implementation of comprehensive, integrated strategic communication and marketing plans that deliver effective communications to advance CALS research and researchers, aligned with NCARS priorities and objectives.
Serve as CALS lead science communicator, producing content as well as coordinating assignments with NC State science writers, CALS Communications, contract science writers, and other communications resources, for scientific journals and science audiences, funders and partners.
Coordinate media and scientific journal outreach and placement with NC State News Services, CALS Communications, and other communications resources.
Write stories for external media and publications, CALS website, magazine, and other owned media that are accessible to funders, state leaders and lay audiences, underscoring the passion, purpose, and impact of researchers and their work.
Collaborate with CALS Communications project management resources to coordinate designers, marketing writers, social media specialists, and videographers to create compelling, integrated research and science communications for various project and initiatives.
