The Association of Public Health Laboratories has retained Slesinger Management Services to recruit a person with extensive experience in marketing, membership, and communications to serve as director of marketing and communications. The ideal candidate will have nonprofit association experience gained from work in scientific, medical, or public health organizations.
The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) is a nonprofit membership association whose mission is to promote the role of public health laboratories in shaping national and global health objectives, and to promote policies, programs, and technologies that assure continuous improvement in the quality of laboratory practice and health outcomes.
APHL’s members are primarily governmental laboratories at state and local levels that monitor, detect, and respond to health threats. APHL also works internationally to build effective national laboratory systems and to expand access to quality diagnostic testing services.
With headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, APHL has a staff of about 200 (some of whom work in Puerto Rico and Africa) and a budget of about $50 million. Most revenue comes from federal agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). APHL also generates revenue from member dues, conference fees, consulting engagements, and corporate sponsors.
Reporting to the chief operating office, the key responsibilities of the director of marketing and communications include:
Leading the marketing and branding of conferences and meetings for members and other public health professionals.
Creating communications strategies to inform key audiences about APHL’s work, including policy makers, journalists, and public health professionals.
Devising strategies to acquire and renew members, most of whom are public health laboratories that are part of state and local government.
Overseeing APHL’s corporate relations program, which provides APHL with unrestricted revenue that helps finance activities outside the realm of U.S. government awards.
Leading a team that includes seven direct reports with expertise in key aspects of marketing, membership, and communications.
Serving as a member of the APHL senior team to help carry out the organization’s strategic goals.
Desired Skills and Characteristics
The ideal director of marketing and communications will be:
Interested and committed to the mission of APHL. Relevant professional experience in medical, scientific or public health nonprofits is strongly desired.
Proven proficiency in translating complex topics into compelling stories for diverse audiences.
Experienced in many of the key aspects of marketing and communications, especially in a nonprofit membership setting.
Knowledgeable about fundraising from corporate sponsors is a plus.
Knowledgeable about best ways to harness new technologies that will enhance APHL’s marketing and communications efforts.
Able to lead and motivate a large department, which until now has been two separate units. With the retirement of two directors, APHL has decided to combine the two departments into one since there are so many complementary activities.
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing, communications, business or science.
Master’s in business, marketing, or communications a plus.
At least 10 years of progressive, relevant professional work experience in marketing, membership, or communications, ideally at scientific, medical, or public health organizations.
At least five years of supervisory experience.
The anticipated salary is in the range of $150,000 to $160,000. APHL provides all staff with a generous benefits package that includes health insurance, paid time off, a retirement plan (10 percent employer contribution), and other policies that recognize and support work-life balance.
