The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in Arlington, VA, a professional scientific society, is recruiting a Marketing Manager. The Marketing Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of AAPS marketing initiatives and product promotions, with an emphasis on those related to membership recruitment and retention, and PharmSci 360, the association’s premier scientific meeting. The role includes directing AAPS’ marketing consultant, writing marketing and promotional text for emails, brochures, and other deliverables, posting messages on AAPS’ social media channels (LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook), and managing AAPS’ promotional calendar including coordinating and send most emails to members. Collaborating with volunteer leaders, AAPS’ partners, and members to craft and push AAPS’ messaging through their channels is an integral part of the role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Manage relationship with marketing consultant, including invoicing, budget preparation, deliverables, and day to day reporting on metrics and goals;
Oversee Request for Proposals process for AAPS marketing consultant needs;
Manage and oversee reporting and analysis on marketing metrics and goals;
Oversee and ensure consistent branding and messaging across all marketing campaigns and materials;
Prepare and report on membership retention and recruitment campaigns and monthly numbers;
Assist in developing budget for membership recruitment and retention and other marketing areas annually;
Draft promotional text for a variety of uses, including in newsletters, slides, printed programs, flyers;
Manage website presence by collaborating with website manager to develop pages ahead of key deadlines and development of content for web pages, including text, photos, and video;
Ensure AAPS’ products and services (membership, journals, meetings, etc.) are promoted at AAPS events and cosponsored events by creating and shipping promotional materials and managing creation and distribution of ads and flyers promoting AAPS’ products and services;
Manage AAPS’ list rentals;
Manage renting lists to support marketing for AAPS’ programs;
Manage mass emails to members, including managing the email calendar, coordinating efforts with third-party vendors and overseeing the deployment of emails by collaborating with staff and vendors to ensure emails are drafted and sent;
Manage AAPS’ social media accounts including posting to and monitoring LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook while collaborating with staff for the posting schedule and strategy and preparing metrics and reports;
Manage traffic to AAPS Communities from social media; Strategize with and support a group of members who support AAPS in social media; and
Manage social media accounts by retiring inactive social media groups/handles, managing hashtags, and updating and maintaining AAPS’ social media policies for both staff and members.
Strong writing and editing skills and experience using style guides.
Coursework or experience in design and brand-management.
Experience in a web-based email management system preferred.
Experience with a member or customer database preferred.
Proven understanding of data management and data management systems.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Excellent member service skills and analytical skills.
Strong time management, prioritization, and project management skills.
Experience dealing with volunteers/clients at all levels of the organization, as well as inter-departmental relationships.
Experience and ease with public speaking to a variety of customers.
Proven success working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Education and Experience
Experience on social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook.
Strong knowledge of MS Office, esp. Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
Experience using Adobe Suite, esp. Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat.
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Master’s Degree in a scientific area preferred.
Majority of work is performed on a personal computer sitting at a desk for long periods of time throughout the day. May be expected to lift boxes up to 25 pounds. Travel 10% of time. Travel to AAPS PharmSci 360 and some 1-3 day workshops required. Evening and weekend work required occasionally. Ability to remain professional in stressful and crisis situations is critical.
Work is performed in a fast-paced, high volume, detail-oriented environment. The work environment is a moderately open one, with a combination of cubicles and offices. The noise level will vary from quiet to loud. Some travel is required.
