PROGRAMSUMMARY The Otter Student Union (OSU) provides facilities, programs, services, activities, and meaningful leadership and employment opportunities for campus life. The Otter Student Union (OSU) is a501(3) nonprofit corporation. Although a legally separate entity, theOSUis a fully integrated part of the California State University, Monterey Bay campus. OSU employees are hired as University Corporation employees, receiving same benefits as current employees and governed by established University Corporation policies. Funding support forOSUoperations is generated from student fees.
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Programs & Communications, Otter Student Union (OSU), and the overall general direction of the OSU Director and OSU Board of Directors, the Marketing & Design Specialist is responsible for creating high-quality, graphic-design content as well as strategically designing, planning, executing, and managing the marketing presence for the Otter Student Union. This position is part of the OSU unit that includes A/V Technical Services and the Union Programming Board (UPB). ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Develops the design and visual content of the web presence, e-newsletters, printed brochures, posters, flyers, and other marketing and information materials for the Otter Student Union (OSU), including the Otter Cross Cultural Center (OC3). Heavy emphasis is placed on graphic creation and design and developing project assignments into clearly conceived designs. Implements enhancements, updates content, and ensures website is current and user-friendly. Creates, monitors, and updates all social media. Creates engaging print and multimedia content, including presentations, photos, and graphics. Produces and edits video content. Assists with live-streaming and other multimedia assignments as necessary and appropriate. (35%)
Plans, implements, and manages consistent, daily, and on-going marketing, social media, and electronic and print publication activities for the OSU. (25%)
Develops and manages marketing processes. Implements and updates OSU brand and style guidelines. Develops and ensures adherence to publication deadlines for events and other activities. Implements an effective marketing database and photographic/video archive. (15%)
Tracks and reports on effectiveness of marketing efforts. Monitors and reports on web and social media analytics to maximize reach and engagement. (10%)
Responsible for recruitment, selection, training, professional development, and evaluation of graphic design and social media student staff. Assists with development of UPB and AV/Technical Services student staff as appropriate. (5%)
Maintains positive relationships with campus partners, including: Information Technology, Student Life departments, University Police Department, Sustainability, Dining Services, Contracts, Facilities, and Conference & Event Services. (5%)
Represents the department on various committees. (5%)
Actively participates in department meetings, training programs, collaborations, retreats, and planning sessions.
Attends seminars and conferences to maintain program and professional development. Stays current on social media and technology advancements and trends.
Applies best practices and adjusts strategies/tactics accordingly.
Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of standard theories, practices, principles, and techniques related to developing and designing print and electronic marketing and public relations communications.
Skills: Strong graphics, marketing, and multimedia design skills. Strong listening and interpretive skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills; time management and interpersonal skills; training skills; conflict resolution skills; and organizational skills with strong attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to manage complex, highly-creative projects on tight deadlines. Ability to remain calm under pressure and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to effectively use a wide variety of technologies to achieve communication goals; independently plan, organize, and coordinate project; interpret and apply rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range improvements; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems, analyze and define problems, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; and ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively. Ability to produce materials within approved budgets.
Minimum Qualifications: Education & Experience: Thorough knowledge of marketing and design fundamentals across multiple platforms demonstrated through a strong portfolio. This background is frequently obtained through a bachelors degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and at least two years of professional or technical experience. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles is essential to initial entry to this classification.
Specialized Skills: Experience with graphic design, software, layout, and printing processes. Demonstrated expertise in digital arts software programs including Adobe Creative Suite Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Premier, After Effects, Lightroom. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Google mail and calendaring programs, and other spreadsheet and database programs. Demonstrated skill with e-mail, MailChimp, social media (including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube). Advanced skills in graphic creation, print design, photography (including an aptitude for portrait, landscapes, and special events), and videography (including recording interviews, events, live feeds, shorts, and informative videos. Skilled in developing, coordinating, designing, and implementing reports and other publications. Strong project management skills. Team-oriented and proactive.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a higher education, non-profit organization or related work environment. Degree in graphic design or art. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment toCSUMBs Vision.

Due to the nature of the work, this position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University Corporations liability coverage. Thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and packages. The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Compensation and Benefits: The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. The hourly range is $22.00-$25.00 per hour, dependent upon experience. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. University Corporation and OSU of CSUMB positions are 'at-will' employment.
