Associate Athletic Director, Marketing and Engagement The University of Delaware Newark, Delaware
The Associate AD, Marketing and Engagement at the University of Delaware is a valued member within the University and Department of Athletics and Recreation Services (DIARS), upholding and embracing the department mission of “Inspiring Greatness Together.” The purpose of the Marketing and Engagement Team is to connect and inspire the Delaware Athletics and Recreation Services community through marketing initiatives, creative content, revenue generation and event experiences with a focus on a deep understanding of the University of Delaware brand and its traditions.
Under limited direction of the Senior Associate Director, External Relations, the Associate Athletic Director, Marketing and Engagement will provide leadership in the areas of event strategy, marketing, revenue and idea generation; directly managing events that promote, enhance, and protect the University of Delaware and its Athletics and Recreation Services Department.
The Associate Athletic Director works closely with members of the External Relations team, Recreation Services, the Office of Communications and Marketing, the University Development and Alumni Relations team and Student Life partners on campus in a collaborative way to execute a comprehensive marketing plan across constituents and to provide best-in-class experiences for our community.

Major Responsibilities: Team Leadership
Manages the Marketing and Engagement team. This includes providing leadership, setting and evaluating individual goals, developing and sustaining appropriate training, and monitoring primary focus area of team members.
Summarizes and reports on all team responsibilities and activities.
Drives a culture of analytics to pursue continuous improvement in all responsible areas.
Drives Team Planning strategy for External Relations team.
Develops the Strategic Marketing & Event budget.
Proactively builds and maintains positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues across campus to enhance the Athletic and Recreation Services Department brand and the University of Delaware mission.
Serves as a member of the External Relations leadership team to promote a culture of growth and learning.
Proactively maintains knowledge of current trends in the revenue generation, events, design, production, development, and communication fields. This includes the following:
o Participating in peer networking opportunities o Participating in professional education opportunities o Monitoring trade publications and websites
Develop creative marketing campaigns through imagery and symbolism that evoke emotion and develop the brand of Delaware Athletics across all sports and into the community.
Drive the overall marketing and revenue generation strategy for football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse providing oversight for the marketing of all sports at Delaware.
Focus deeply on the department’s paid advertising strategy that focuses on digital advertising, radio, billboards, commercials, and other high-visibility avenues. Use analytics to evaluate opportunities and success.
Approve look and feel of collateral pieces and help develop creative concepts for graphic artwork and other design elements,
Serve as a project manager for high-visibility design pieces that spread across multiple departments or units.
Oversee and manage the team in the execution of marketing elements across all sports including, but not limited to, emails, signage, flyers, and grassroot events.
Help drive strategy for marketing of Recreation Services, Delaware Pool and Ice Arenas, and The BOB external events such as concerts, live shows, etc.
Supports innovative engagement and creative initiatives for recruiting prospective student-athletes to the University of Delaware.
Oversees all campus engagement efforts of Delaware Athletics and Recreation Services to ensure collaboration across the University.
Assist in setting the overall strategy of student engagement initiatives including, but not limited to, email marketing, website, signage, tailgates, Blue Hen Fridays, giveaways, and social media.
Work with varsity teams and units across campus to better integrate coaches and current student-athletes into the campus community through programming that allows genuine connections and relationship building.
Game Presentation and Events
Oversees meaningful and innovative event and game-day experiences for our community to engage, inspire and entertain. This includes but is not limited to: athletic competitions, fan days, building dedications, home and away game tailgates, student programming and celebration/recognition dinners.
Continuously improves the atmosphere for our Student-Athletes that fosters a competitive home advantage.
Builds and maintains a fan engagement strategy to further the Athletic Department mission and engage all audiences.
Ensures all events reflect Delaware Athletics’ strategic vision and brand standards.
In partnership with the Marketing and Engagement team, clearly articulates desired and measurable outcomes for each event.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree with five years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in higher education (or a comparably complex organization), sports management, communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans and programs that support the Athletic Department mission and contribute to the overall goals and objectives of the external relations programs.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with alumni, donors and community members.
Ability to generate strategic and creative solutions in order to advance the department’s efforts to maintain and strengthen high-quality relationships with all audiences.
Ability with managing multi-phase projects from inception to completion, including the ability to build consensus among team members and balance multiple concurrent priorities.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to use both problem solving and sound judgment in situations requiring independent initiative and tact.
Experience with brand management, event coordination, revenue generation and communication plans.
Ability to work in a networked way, emphasizing collaboration in a complex environment.
Exemplify core purpose and values of the Athletics Department. Assist the Senior Associate Athletics Director of External Relations in promoting an ethical culture supportive of the department's mission and future strategic plans.
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Special Requirements: Ability to travel is required for this role. Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.
