AIA Virginia is the voice of the architecture profession in the Commonwealth, dedicated to serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment. Its vision is to empower its members and inspire the creation of a better built environment through a culture of innovation. The organization consists of approximately 2,500 architects and designers in varying career stages and niches of work. AIA Virginia works in coordination with five local components: AIA Blue Ridge, AIA Central Virginia, AIA Hampton Roads, AIA Northern Virginia and AIA Richmond. Together with the national component and components across the country, we form one AIA to deliver the full-service experience to its members.

Summary: To develop and direct a comprehensive communications program which promotes the value of AIA Virginia and informs the membership, external stakeholders, and the public of industry issues and association activities on a timely basis. Responsible for organization’s media relations, public relations, image campaigns, and online communications.
Duties: The Director of Communications and Marketing role is a highly important and visible position for AIA Virginia as it is the primary source of information for both internal and external stakeholders of the organization.
Assignments will include:
Maintain public relations programs and communications activities for AIA Virginia
Collaborate with assigned staff to develop and direct AIA Virginia’s marketing campaigns for programs and events, develop content of association publications, announcements, etc.
Routine posting and monitoring of the association and member online voice and image
Identify publishing, speaking, and interview opportunities for AIA Virginia leadership and the Executive Vice President
Maintain and communicate current awareness of industry issues to members, public, and among state elected officials and government entities
Develop and execute the messaging, marketing, and communications for AIA Virginia’s digital publication, Inform, and all programs of the organization
Draft and publish digital newsletter (currently distributed monthly)
Write, edit, and develop promotional materials across multiple platforms, issue press releases, newsletters and magazine articles, speeches, scripts, fact sheets for interviews, etc.
Liaison with authors who contribute content to Inform and coordinate with advertising & sales staff
Oversight of graphic design and image work on behalf of the association services, programs, and projects
Photography as necessary
Oversee brand management of the organization
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Vice President
The position is full-time with partial remote-working capabilities. Minimum travel may be required.
Education Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, English, Communications, and/or Marketing with news/editorial/public relations emphasis is preferred.
Experience Requirements: Minimum of three (3) years recent work experience in news writing, editing, and public relations. Previous association or experience with membership-focused organizations is ideal.
Ability to communicate in both the written and spoken word. Strong research and writing skills with superior editing skills.
Well organized and able to interpret relevant insights from various resources.
Proactively engages AIA Virginia members on a regular basis in matters of importance. Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills are critical for success.
Working knowledge and experience in social media and reputation management on behalf of a business organization.
Maintains a positive attitude and possesses the ability to interact well with members, legislators, Board, and fellow staff members.
Management abilities with the skills needed to coordinate member activities.
Must be self-directed, able to identify projects, develop strategies to conduct projects and see projects to completion.
Strong communication and presentation skills, articulate, and professional.
Ability to interact effectively with executives at all levels and represent the organization with a high degree of integrity.
Highly motivated with ability and initiative to work independently, set priorities and handle multiple tasks with good judgment.
Basic graphic design skills.
Capable of budgeting, planning, and producing with a budget.
