As Senior Director of Software Engineering, you'll have a great opportunity to help Northwestern Mutual develop deeply integrated experiences for our customers. This role's focus is on our marketing, notifications, and campaign management platforms for current and future customers. You will partner closely with client experience peers in bringing new capabilities to life through our multi-channel approach. This position reports to the VP of Client Experience Engineering.
We are looking for a capable leader who has a proven track record of delivering on business strategy, growing and developing teams and who knows how to run high-performing teams and create an extraordinary engineering culture. The ideal person will be someone who can operate in strategic initiatives and deliver tactically while demonstrating strong analytical and leadership skills. This person will have a deep understanding of technology solutions and has demonstrated out of the box problem solving skills and innovative mindset.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Foster a culture of collaborative problem-solving within the agile teams so that we can achieve the right balance between value and cost while also delighting customers
Create a strong engineering culture of ownership, empowerment and learning
Evaluate and select the right technologies that provide both velocity, developer productivity and stability for the business
Hire top talent, while evaluating and growing the existing team
Work collaboratively with architecture to ensure that all our platform & products adopt a modular architecture with the right levels of abstraction
Ensure the highest quality of code by putting in place the right process and tools including unit tests, build acceptance testing etc.
Work collaboratively with product management to ensure all software being developed meets product and design specifications
Represent all of technology as tech practice lead and single point of contact for product, business and other stakeholders during strategy and delivery.
Ensure that the team prioritizes business needs but also carves out time to reduce technical debt
Lead the technical roadmap for our products
Make sure software being developed meets Northwestern Mutual standards of security and privacy
Bring Your Best! What this role needs:
Must have a minimum of 9 years of experience in software engineering with minimum of 3 years leading multiple teams
Technical chops and hands-on technical knowledge
Proven track record of delivering complex projects
Hands-on experience in development of containerized applications and services with expertise in creating highly performing backend applications and delightful user interfaces
Validated experience with design patterns, APIs, web service technologies, applications, and application ecosystems
Extensive Experience with web services standards and related technologies (HTTP, XML, JSON, REST, SOAP, WS*) and authentication methods such as OAuth and SAML
Experience implementing continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools
Secure code development and security design
Experience with AWS
Deep understanding of application architecture concepts
