The University Communications department is recruiting for the Director of Special Communications & Marketing Projects.
Reporting to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO), this position independently leads and oversees special projects and strategic initiatives in the office of the CCMO to advance achievement of the University’s strategic communications objectives. Serves as a member of the CCMO's leadership team providing counsel and input in the execution of UC San Diego’s strategic communications plan. Works closely with the CCMO to develop and execute organizational communication strategy and high-priority complex projects, initiatives, and events that elevate the prestige and distinction of the university. Serves as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in strategic communications planning and execution and recognized expertise in long-range messaging for multiple and diverse audiences; troubleshooting and expectations management.
Serves as a strong facilitator and liaison to advance the organization's mission and goals. Promotes a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, respect, and superior customer service to internal and external constituents. Actively, deliberately and thoughtfully infuses inclusivity and diversity throughout university communications.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Bachelor's degree in a related area with 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience / training. 10+ years’ experience in planning and implementing strategic communications initiatives in a complex organization preferred.
- Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) preferred.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
- Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communication plans.
- Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
- Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
- Proven ability to write and communicate effectively in a variety of ways (magazine articles, press releases, reports, speeches, web content, social media, brochures, white papers, talking points, etc.) and in ways appreciate for targeted audiences (i.e., media, support groups, legislators).
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
