Position Summary
The AVC has a unique opportunity at one of the nationâ™s top-ranked academic medical centers to define the direction and goals of a nascent brand and marketing program, to build the right management team to meet those goals, and to play a critical role in advancing the mission of WashU Medicine.
The AVC will develop and implement WashU Medicineâ™s strategic brand and marketing plans as well as the departmentâ™s operational priorities; increase external and internal understanding and awareness of academic medical centerâ™s programs, services, brand, and image; represent WashU Medicine to the community and public. In addition to directly supporting the strategic goals of the Dean and Deanâ™s executive leadership team, work collaboratively with University Marketing & Communications, School of Medicine Advancement, WashU Medicine hospital partners, and departments and divisions across the medical school campus.
Of critical importance will be having the political acumen; tact, wisdom, and dynamism to identify and articulate exciting stories happening across the medical school campus; forge strong partnerships; and engage our BJC partners to elevate the brand and share stories that highlight WashU Medicineâ™s incredible strengths and ambitious goals.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Plans, directs, achieves, and evaluates the major strategic planning and development activities for the Marketing staff of WashU Medicine to assure the accomplishment of our mission, goals, and institutional objectives.
Recruits and directs a leadership team that exhibits the highest levels of creativity, competence, integrity, and collegiality.Â
Develops integrated marketing plans that reflect the strategic goals of the school and clearly articulate the mission, vision, and values of the academic medical center and its tripartite mission. Leads implementation of those strategic and operational objectives.
With political deftness, integrates and directs department-based marketing and communications programs.Â
Increases external and internal understanding and awareness of our academic medical centerâ™s programs, services, brand, and image.
Develops coordinated, appropriate, timely and effective communications to educate and inform key constituencies and raise the profile of WashU Medicine regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Provides proactive council and direction to leadership and develop leadership into better external communicators.
Directs system market research to attain timely and actionable information and analysis.
Promotes an environment that supports cohesive and integrated communication across a highly matrixed academic environment though impactful collaborative relationships across the university, the school, and with our hospital and industry partners.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Masterâ™s degree in a marketing discipline or other related area such as business or communications.
Demonstrated success in leading change in a complex organization.
Proven success in working cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with the ability to influence and interact with all levels of senior leadership, professional, clinical, technical, academic, and administrative faculty, and staff.
Advanced market research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Highly developed managerial and leadership skills with a track record of building, motivating and managing high performance teams towards the accomplishment of established goals.
Ability to promote cultural competency and community engagement. Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and inclusivity.
Ability to align enterprise strategy with overall communications strategy and appropriately balance the ability to be strategic and execute tactical functional execution.
Knowledge and experience in all aspects of assigned functions, as well as development in management of operational and capital budget.
Demonstrated highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline.
Fifteen years of increasingly responsible marketing management experience in a large, complex and highly matrixed organization.
Breadth of experience across marketing strategy and planning, brand strategy, customer segmentation, analytics and digital marketing, integrated campaign management and CRM.
Demonstrated experience in conceiving, implementing and evaluating strategic programs to achieve established goals.
